FAQ

Heritage colour FAQ

Can I just paint my heritage home any colour I want?

Inside, generally yes. Outside, it depends on your council. Most heritage overlays in Adelaide (City of Unley, Norwood Payneham & St Peters, City of Prospect, Burnside, Adelaide Hills, City of Adelaide) require a Development Approval for external paint colour changes. Your painter can usually submit the DA on your behalf for an admin fee.

What's the difference between a Federation and a Victorian palette?

Victorian (1840-1900) leans deep and rich: dark reds, dark greens, navy walls with cream trims and near-black ironwork. Federation (1900-1915) is softer: sage green, terracotta, cream — friendlier and lighter. They are sometimes confused but the era of the home dictates the right palette.

Should bluestone or sandstone be painted?

No. Painting porous stone traps moisture and damages the substrate. Heritage-correct treatment is to leave bluestone and sandstone unpainted (or seal only if moisture is an issue). The palettes here apply to the painted elements: trims, render, weatherboards, decorative ironwork, doors.

Are these the only heritage-correct colours?

No — they're a starting point. Dulux Heritage and Porters Paints both publish full era-specific ranges with dozens of options. The palettes here are the safest, most-used combinations from the Adelaide Painters network. A heritage painter will refine based on your home's specifics.
