FAQ

About the cost estimator

How accurate is this house painting cost estimator?

It's an indicative range based on real Adelaide painter pricing in 2026. The mid figure typically lands within 15% of a final fixed-price quote. The low and high figures show the band you should expect three quotes to cluster within. Your actual quote will depend on site inspection — surface condition, access details, and exact materials chosen.

Why does prep work change the price so much?

Prep is 70% of the labour on most painting jobs. A house with peeling paint, lead-safe handling required, render cracks or extensive sanding can take 3-4× longer to prepare than a house in good condition. Skipping prep makes the job cheaper but the new coat fails in 3-4 years instead of 10+. We model this with a 0.85x to 1.4x multiplier.

What's the difference between builder, premium and specialty paint?

Builder grade is the cheap white tin most volume builders use — fine for short-term but fades fast. Premium (Dulux Wash & Wear, Taubmans Endure, Haymes Ultra-Premium) is what most professional painters specify for long-life finish. Specialty (Porters Paints, Dulux Heritage, antimicrobial formulations) is for heritage work, premium homes, or specific environments. Difference: 15-25% on cost, 30-50% on lifespan.

Why is heritage painting so much more expensive?

Heritage homes (Federation, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco) need lead-safe preparation for any building pre-1970, period-correct palettes, decorative element restoration (fretwork, lacework, trims), and often a Development Approval for external colour changes. Combined, this typically adds 40-80% to a standard painting quote.

I got a quote much lower than this estimate. Should I be concerned?

If a quote sits more than 30% below the low end of this estimator's range, it almost always means: (1) less prep, (2) cheaper paint, (3) missing scope, or (4) no insurance/licensing. Get two more quotes for the same scope and compare. The cheapest of three solid quotes is usually fine; a single dramatically-low outlier is a red flag.
