Spring and autumn are ideal, but there are specific weeks you should target — and weeks to avoid.
Adelaide has four distinct painting seasons, and not all of them work for every job. Spring and autumn are the clear winners for exterior work; interiors can be painted year-round.
The best window for exterior painting. Mild temperatures (15-25°C), low humidity, stable weather. Book early — most painters fill their spring calendar by late July. Heritage homes especially benefit from spring scheduling because there’s enough time before summer heat to allow second-coat curing.
The second-best window. Still stable weather, slightly shorter drying times than spring due to cooler nights. Good for heritage work because the Dulux Heritage range shifts with lighting conditions. Often easier to book than spring because demand drops slightly.
Exterior work is possible but painters avoid days over 32°C. Paint dries too fast on hot surfaces, leaving brush strokes and lap marks. Early mornings (pre-9am) are the usable window on hot days. Interior summer is fine — air conditioning compensates and most premium paints have good open-time formulations.
Interior work runs year-round. Exteriors are tricky — dew mornings, short drying windows, and rain days. Most painters still do exterior in winter but expect 20-30% longer project durations. Use our painting timeline planner to see climate-adjusted project lengths by season.
If you’re in Mount Barker, Blackwood or other Hills suburbs, add 1-2 weeks to any seasonal estimate. Higher humidity, more rain days, and morning dew all extend exterior project timelines.
